KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AR Drachm (16mm, 4.25 g, 3h). In the types of Alexander III. Babylon mint. Struck under Seleukos I Nikator, circa 320-319/8 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; wheel and monogram in left field, monogram below throne. Price P191; Waggoner obv. die 249/– (unlisted rev. die); SNG Berry 288 = ANS inv. 1965.77.137 (same obv. die). Lightly toned, a few light scratches and marks, minor flan flaw on obverse. Good VF. Very rare, four recorded by Waggoner, one additional in Pella, six others in CoinArchives.

Ex Leu Numismatik Web Auction 23 (22 August 2022), lot 3146.

The attribution of this issue to the 1st satrapy of Seleukos I is suggested by the presence of the wheel-marked issues in the November 2003 hoard (article by C. Lorber forthcoming). This hoard confirms the higher dating of the issues of Babylon proposed by N. Waggoner in her seminal die study of the Babylonian Alexanders, and refutes the low chronology of Price. Though the tetradrachms with wheel and supplemental controls are quite numerous, this coin is from the sole issue of drachms of this series.
