Ex Berlin surgeon Collection (Part II, Hirsch 279, 8 February 2012), lot 2487, purchased before 1895.

This coin was part of a large collection of ancient coins begun in the 1870s by the Berlin surgeon and personal physician of Prince Karl von Preussen (1801-1883). After his death in 1895, his wife inherited the collection. Their son inherited the collection but did not add to it. When he retired in the 1960s he gave the collection to his daughter and her husband who lived in Munich. This is the collector who began writing an inventory of the coins. He continued to build up the collection and documented all provenances with great care. He then consigned them to auction with Hirsch. The first part of this outstanding collection, featuring the Greek issues, had been sold in September 2011.
