Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine. 610-641. AV Solidus (11.5mm, 4.48 g, 6h). Carthage mint. Dated IY 11 (637/8). D N ЄRA CI CONTAN PP V IA, crowned facing busts of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, both wearing chlamys; cross above / VICTORIA AG, cross potent set on two steps; IA//CONOB. DOC 227a.2 var. (legends); MIB 84b.9; SB 867. Toned, deposits. Near EF. A very nice example.

Indiction years 11 and 14 are the most difficult to place in the series due to the smallness of the letters used, a variety of small stylistic and legend differences, and the fact that there are two sets of IY 11 and 14 in the series. The difficulty is additionally compounded by the presence of mules in the series. The indiction date on this coin is clearly an IA rather than a IΔ which narrows the possible attribution to either the 1st or 2nd IY 11 (622/3 or 637/8). This coin has been attributed to the second indiction year 11 largely due to the obverse legend being closest to the DOC 227a.2 example. In particular this coin and the DOC example both feature long legends for Heraclius Constantine with the DOC example reading COHTAN and this coin reading similarly reading CONTAN.
