Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (22mm, 4.77 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. IMP C M CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / PA X AVG, Pax standing left, holding olive branch and vertical scepter; S|P//–. RIC V 481 var. (mint mark). Glossy dark green patina with some brown highlights, slightly off center. Good VF. A very nice example of a scarce issue.
From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection. Ex Collection of a Classicist (Baldwin’s 99, 4 May 2016), lot 750; possibly Richard Cyril Lockett Collection (Part I, Glendining, 6 June 1955), lot 162 (part of) and P. Webb Collection.
This coin belongs to a group of other coins of Carausius and Allectus that were sold most recently by Baldwin’s in 2016 from the Collection of a Classicist. Many of these coins were sold previously by Glendining from the Lockett Collection Part I in 1955. Appearing already from this group were Triton XXVII, lot 892, CNG 126, lot 889, and the upcoming CNG 127, lot 585; all of which were confirmed to be ex Lockett. In that sale were a number of large lots containing the more common or scarce issues such as this coin. Thus, this coin may well belong to a large lot from that sale, though this is regrettably not confirmable due to the lack of illustrations in the sale and a lack of detailed notes for this and similar issues in Lockett’s acquisition files.
