Though Lafayette is most famous for his involvement in the American Revolution, he was also involved in the early events of the French Revolution. Appointed commander in chief of the national guard by the Assembly, Lafayette struggled to maintain order between the nobles and the republicans during the chaotic time, until he resigned the command in 1791. The general found himself increasingly at odds with the leadership, leading him to flee to the Austrian Netherlands in 1792, where he was captured and held until 1797.
