CILICIA, Uncertain. 4th century BC. AR Obol (10.5mm, 0.74 g, 6h). Draped bust, wearing satrapal headdress, facing slightly left; star to left / Crowned and draped female bust left. Gökturk 88 (Evagoras II in Salamis); Troxell & Kagan –; SNG BN –; SNG Levante –; Winzer 18.2 (Mazaios in Cilicia). Lightly toned, pitting. Near EF.

The proposed attribution of this type to Evagoras II, originally made in the 19th century, is likely incorrect (cf. SNG Kayhan 1066 for a similar obol historically attributed to Evagoras). Interestingly, although Gökturk 88 retains the attribution to Evagoras II, Gökturk 52, another obol certainly related to this type, is placed at an uncertain mint in Cilicia.

Closing Date and Time: 18 December 2024 at 10:46:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
