Valens. AD 364-378. Æ (22.5mm, 4.27 g, 12h). Constantinople mint. Struck circa March AD 368. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust left / Two-turreted camp gate, open doors; S above; COMTM. Cf. RIC IX 40 (for similar issue); cf. LRBC 2089 (same); cf. Depeyrot p. 236, 25-6 (for date of concurrent solidi issue). Dark brown and green patina with some red, some minor cleaning/smoothing scratches. Good VF. Extremely rare and presently unique. No others in CoinArchives.

From the Bernard Victory Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 63 (21 May 2003), lot 1550.

It is likely that this coin is a bronze issue struck alongside the rare Depeyrot 25/1 and 26/1-2 gold solidi issues. Despite the error in the reverse legend, the style is consistent enough with the RIC IX 40 coin (e.g. Glendining, 15 July 1929), lot 1023.

Closing Date and Time: 23 January 2025 at 11:00:40 ET.
