NORMAN. William I 'the Conqueror'. 1066-1087. AR Penny (18mm, 1.14 g, 8h). Bonnet type (BMC ii). York mint; Authgrimr, moneyer. Struck circa 1068-1070. Crowned facing bust / + OVÐGRIM ON EOFR, voided cross, with annulet at center, pile in each quarter, and pellet-between-crescents at each end. SCBI 21 (Yorkshire), 722-8 (same dies); BMC 174; North 842; SCBC 1251. Toned, scratches, fire damage(?). Near VF.

The collector suggests that this coin exhibits evidence of fire damage, possibly related to the harrying of the North, when William campaigned in northern England against Edgar Ætheling, the last of Anglo-Saxon claimant to the throne.
