These coins of Bourges appear to have become an immobilised type which was minted throughout the period from Charles the Bald’s accession as emperor in 875 until Odo replaced them in 888. They were evidently minted in large numbers and remained in circulation for a long while, as 18 ended up in the Cuerdale hoard of around 905 and 17 in the Rennes hoard of circa 920. The majority were probably minted under Emperor Charles the Fat (884–8). [S. Coupland]
