EGYPT, Alexandria. Aelius. Caesar, AD 136-138. Æ Diobol (24mm, 9.07 g, 12h). Dated RY 21 of Hadrian (AD 136/7). Bareheaded and draped bust right, seen from the front / Euthenia standing facing, head left, holding patera in right hand, grain ears in left; ΔHM ЄΞOY C VΠAT B (date) around. Köln 1272; Dattari (Savio) 7998; K&G 34.6; RPC III 6242; Emmett 1353. Red-brown patina, minor green deposits, some roughness, scratches. Near VF.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection, purchased from Nilus Coins, 9 October 2007.

This reverse has typically been referred to as Homonoia but Homonoia holds a cornucopia and patera, this figure holds grain ears. An attribution to Euthenia seems more likely.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
