Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (18.5mm, 3.35 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck AD 319-320. Radiate and cuirassed bust left, raising hand / Two Victories standing vis-à-vis, holding between them a shield inscribed VOT/ PR in two lines set on an altar decorated by a star within wreath; PLN. RIC VII –; RML 918 corr. (no globe); C&T 9.01.025 corr. (same; same dies as illustrated example). Dark brown-green patina. Good VF. Extremely rare. RR in both C&T and RML.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from David Miller, 10 August 2010.

C&T acknowledge in their footnote that “the left hand and globe are sketchy” on the obverse die of the Berlin coin. Upon inspection of this coin, which shares dies with the Berlin coin cited by both C&T and RML, there does not appear to be a globe in the left hand of Constantine. Additionally, the “quasi-consular” bust does indeed appear to have pteryges as noted in RML’s footnote 46. Thus, the bust has been cataloged here as cuirassed despite having trabeate features.

Closing Date and Time: 19 February 2025 at 14:06:00 ET.
