Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (17.5mm, 2.52 g, 7h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 322-324. Laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter / Banded globe set on altar inscribed VOT/IS/ XX in three lines; three stars above; F|B//PLON. RIC VII –; RML 1075; C&T 9.06.007; C. King, “The Appleford Hoard” in RBN CXXIII (1977) p. 64, 276-8 corr. (RIC reference; this coin one of). Dark green-brown patina, reverse die wear. VF. Rare.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection. Ex 1954 Appleford Hoard (IRBCH 1261).

It is noted in C&T’s note to 9.06.008 that “many of the hoard coins recorded here may by ambiguous” regarding those that are trabeate (C&T 9.06.008) and those that are cuirassed (C&T 9.06.007). With this coin from Appleford, it is clear that King mistakenly recorded this example as trabeate (RIC VII 243) rather than as the cuirassed bust it actually is.

Closing Date and Time: 19 February 2025 at 14:08:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
