IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hemihekte – Twelfth Stater (7mm, 1.12 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Head of roaring lion right / Quadripartite incuse square. Trace deposits, struck with worn obverse die. Near VF.

The head of lion is a common type in early electrum coinage, which can only be differentiated by the style of the head and the form of the incuse. The present issue is of perhaps that most typical, a lion head right with a plain incuse. The style is dissimilar to published examples of this type. However, this issue is part of a series with varying metal quality, as the following lot is an example with very low gold content, appearing as nearly silver, whereas the present piece has a high gold content with an orange surface color.
