JUDAEA, Caesarea Maritima. 1st-3rd centuries CE. Æ ‘Minim’ (13mm, 1.29 g, 6h). Copying an Alexandrian dichalkon. Laureate and draped bust right / Eagle standing left, head right, with wings gathered. Hamburger, Caesarea –. Red-brown patina. VF.
From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection, purchased from Nilus Coins, 10 January 2009.
A recurring phenomenon around Caesarea is the appearance of reduced module imitations of circulating coinage. The pieces most often published are so-called “minima,” which copy the bronze prutahs of the Herodian kings, procurators, and the First Jewish War. Additionally, small denomination Roman provincial coins from Phoenicia and the Levant as well as Alexandria were copied, Byzantine nummi and pentanummi are also found in lesser amounts. As quantities of these coins have been found in outlying regions, especially around the sites of the legionary encampments, rather than in the city proper, they probably served as a token currency in the camps and their associated settlements. For further discussion, see H. Hamburger, “Minute Coins from Caesarea,” Atiqot I (1956).
