Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (22.5mm, 3.09 g, 2h). Radiate and draped bust of Carausius right / Pax standing left, holding branch and scepter. Cf. RIC V 880. Green patina, flan crack. VF. Overstruck on Antoninianus of Gallienus (cf. RIC V 283).

This fascinating antoninianus was overstruck on an issue of Gallienus, a phenomenon not uncommon in the era. Curiously, the obverse and reverse legends of the type are fully visible and align perfectly with the Carausian types: GALLIENVS P F AVG on the obverse, and PAX SOLI CO[NS AVG] on the reverse, along with traces of the pegasus undertype.

Closing Date and Time: 29 July 2020 at 11:57:20 ET.
