Michael VIII Palaeologus (?). 1261-1282. AR Aspron Trachy (25mm, 1.94 g, 6h). Magnesia mint. Half-length figure of St. George facing, holding spear and shield / Michael standing facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger, being crowned by Christ standing left. DOC –; LPC –; PCPC –; LBC –; SB –. Toned, broken. Good VF. Extremely rare and possibly unique.

This enigmatic and possibly unique piece cannot be assigned with certainty due to the emperor’s name missing through the breakage, but aspects of which comfortably fit the above attribution.
