EGYPT, Alexandria. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ Dichalkon (15mm, 2.31 g, 12h). ‘Coins probably incorrectly attributed to Caligula’. Dated CY 21 (10/9 BC). Ibis standing right / Crocodile standing left, wearing disc; L KA (date) above and in exergue. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) 113 var. (crocodile right); K&G A.5; RPC I 5111; Emmett 4259.21 (R3). Red-brown patina with green deposits, edge chip. Good VF. Very rare, one of the finest known and with a clear date.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection, purchased from Nilus Coins, 5 July 2006.

Andrew Burnett, in “The Alexandrian Coinage of Caligula” (D. Gerin, A. Geissen and M. Amandry (eds), Aegyptiaca serta in Soheir Bakhoum memoriam. Mélanges de numismatique, d’iconographie et d’histoire, 2008) successfully argues that this rare type must have been struck during the reign of Augustus. The date L KA (21) could only have been struck by Augustus or Trajan, and hoard evidence excludes coins dated after AD 121. Stylistically, this coin favors Augustus and a later BC date.

Closing Date and Time: 21 May 2025 at 13:08:00 ET.
