ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Obol(?) (8.5mm, 0.88 g, 6h). Forepart of bull left; to right, dolphin downward / European spider crab within incuse square. Leu Numismatik AG Web Auction 13, lot 142; Nomos Obolos 33, lot 521; otherwise, unpublished in the standard references. Toned, some earthen deposits, granular surfaces, slightly off center, minor marks. VF. Very rare.

Some of the prior sales attributed this issue to the Bosporan king Leukon II, based on the use of the reverse symbols on his issues. However, these symbols appear elsewhere, and Zeus does not appear on Leukon’s coinage, so an attribution to that king remains speculative.
