Gordian III. AD 238-244. AR Antoninianus (23mm, 4.05 g, 5h). Antioch mint. 1st series, AD 238-239. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / P M TR P II COS P P, Providentia standing left, holding globe and transverse scepter. Bland, Gordian III 44; RIC IV 172; RSC 196a. VF.

From the Richard McAlee Collection.

The collector described the reverse of this example as Providentia holding a conical shape with an eagle on the right side, and suggested it may represent the Stone of Emesa. To this cataloger, however, it seems more likely that there is a small die flaw on the side of Providentia’s usual globe.
