MARCIA OTAC ILIA SEVERA AVG, draped bust right, wearing stephane, set on crescent / PIETAS AVG N, Pietas standing left, holding globe and scepter; to left, child standing right, extending hands toward Pietas. Bland Study –; RIC IV –; RSC –; CNG 97, lot 709 (hammer $3750); cf. Gemini I, lot 423 (hammer $3000) = Künker 143, lot 646 (same obv. die, but with CONCORDIA AVGVSTI rev. type). Toned, minor flan flaw. Good VF. Extremely rare early obverse legend with name spelled in full.

From the Richard McAlee Collection.

This coin apparently comes from the extremely rare first issues of Otacilia at Antioch, when the mint gave the empress’s name in full, before abbreviating it. This cataloger could find only three other examples with this obverse legend: the two cited above, plus another in a private collection.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
