TOKENS & BADGES. Early 13th century. Lot of two (2) Pewter Tokens. (17x22mm, 1.09 g.) Eagle facing with wings spread, head left; all within beaded border / Blank. Mitchiner & Skinner A10. // (17x22mm, 1.05 g). Agnus Dei standing right; cross behind. cf. Mitchiner & Skinner A1-3.. Mitchiner, Pilgrim –. Casting flaws, the second cracked. Good VF. Rare.

Reportedly found in the Billinsgate spoils.

These two pieces are from what Mitchiner & Skinner classify as the earliest in the English token series, with lugs to allow them to be sewn into purses or articles of clothing. The authors note that, “the medieval token is better thought of as being a ‘chit-for-service,’ rather than as an item with a set monetary relationship...” (Mitchiner & Skinner p. 29)

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
