THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 479-460 BC. AR Drachm (16.5mm, 5.06 g, 11h). Horse grazing left; above, cicada left / Sandal of Jason left; labrys above, ΛARI-SA-IO-N counterclockwise around from lower left; all within incuse square. BCD Thessaly II 129 (this coin); HGC 4, 393. Attractively toned, a little off center on reverse. Near EF. Extremely rare first issue at Larissa.

The Sandal of Jason series is the earliest coinage at Larissa, consisting of all denominations from drachms to tetartemoria. The series is characterized by the depiction of a sandal in incuse on the reverse of the drachms, hemidrachms, and obols, while the hemiobols and tetartemoria only have the city ethnic.
