The obverse is clearly derived from the issues of Rouen, while the reverse is reminiscent of the vast series of continental sceattas from Frisia. Find spots preclude either of these, however, and Adam Christophe’s analysis of the known examples allows the legend to be expanded and fully read as METALO TEOdERICIACO. He places this at the Motam Theberciaci (Motte of Theodeberciacus), an ancient villa in Thiverzay. Schiesser & Seguin suggest that the obverse legend “Ledegiselus” indicates a powerful individual, rather than a moneyer.
