Anonymous. Circa 217-215 BC. Æ Quadrans (35.5mm, 37.55 g, 2h). Rome mint. Head of Hercules right, wearing boar skin headdress; ••• (mark of value) to left / Bull charging right; ••• (mark of value) above, snake below. Crawford 39/2; Sydenham 94; RBW 106. Dark green patina which is chipped in areas on the reverse. Good VF.

From the W. Toliver Besson Collection. Ex Property of Princeton Economics acquired by Martin Armstrong (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 275, 7 March 2012), lot 58; Henry Platt Hall Collection (Part I, Glendining, 19 July 1950), lot 450.

This quadrans is part of the first struck bronze series issued by Rome since the tiny Romano-Campanian issues. Aside from the as itself, still a cast piece weighing 128 grams, Crawford 39 includes a triens, quadrans, sextans, uncia, and semuncia (”half-ounce”). The series represents a large step toward the coinage reform of 212-211 BC, in which all bronze denominations were struck on a much reduced standard.
