KINGS of CAPPADOCIA. Ariarathes III. Circa 230-220 BC. Æ (14.5mm, 2.93 g, 12h). Tyana mint. Head of female right, wearing kalathos / Ivy leaf inscribed ΔΣ downward on left and TY on right. Simonetta 4 (temp. Ariarathes IV – Ariarathes VII); HGC 7, 803 [neither references noting the letters on the leaf]. Dark green-brown patina, light earthen dusting. VF. Rare.

This type was previously extremely rare, but a quantity has appeared on CoinArchives over the past decade. A close inspection of these suggest that the letters visible here were present on all examples, but being engraved on a high point of the reverse, is likely too worn to be visible on most pieces. These controls are used on bronzes of Ariaramnes and Ariarathes III, so it is likely that this issue, in the name of Ariarathes, belongs among the coins of the latter.
