Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (18.5mm, 2.96 g, 6h). Earlier style. Unmarked mint. Struck circa AD 286-287. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Tutela standing left, sacrificing at altar set at her feet to left and holding cornucopia. RIC V.5 1654 (this coin cited and illustrated). Dark green patina. Near VF. Extremely rare British mint Tutela type, one of three examples cited in RIC V.5.

Tutela is the concept and personification of guardianship or stewardship. Under Roman law, tutela was granted to women and minors legally emancipated from their paterfamilias. While often added as an epithet to other gods and goddesses, she makes a rare appearance fully personified on coins, mainly just on coins of Carausius. The Tutela type is more common at Rotomagus, with this the only issue from a British mint.
