Constantine IV Pogonatus. 668-685. AR Miliarense (18mm, 4.18 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 674-681. Helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder and shield decorated with horseman motif / Cross potent set on globe on three steps; palm fronds flanking. DOC 20 corr. (three steps not two); MIB 61; SB 1165. Toned, somewhat irregular flan. Near EF.
From the Best Collection of Byzantine Coins. Ex Helios 6 (9 March 2011), lot 274.
Given that this coin’s weight tends towards the heavier end of the spectrum for this issue, it is likely that the flan was reduced during flan preparation resulting in this somewhat jagged shape.
