The legends on this extremely rare denier can be read as Beatus Trophimus, referring to Saint Trophimus, the first bishop of Arles who was sent to that city in the mid 3rd century by Pope Fabian. Though clearly an ecclesiastical issue, the main cathedral in Arles was the Basilica of Saint-Étienne, dedicated in the 5th century, and it was not until the 12th century that the current Romanesque cathedral was dedicated to the local Saint Trophime.
