In 1935, at the urging of the New Zealand Numismatic Society, the Royal mint issued a silver crown commemorating the Treaty of Waitangi, an agreement between the indigenous Maori chiefs of the North Island and the British crown that established British sovereignty over the island and guaranteed the Maori the rights of British subjects. While some privately preferred to wait until the centennial of the Treaty in 1940, New Zealand authorities opted instead to capitalize on a recent burst in historical interest and to instead issue coin as soon as possible. A design committee was established and several proposals were considered before they ultimately selected an Art Deco design by Percy Metcalfe. Minister of Finance Gordon Coates also took an active hand in the process, demanding several seemingly minor modifications to the design’s execution that delayed striking until December 1934. The final design depicts Maori chief Tāmati Waka Nene, holding a taiaha and standing right, shaking hands with Captain William Hobson, Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand.
Ultimately, only 660 crowns were struck for circulation, with an additional 468 proofs struck for sets. Today, the Waitangi crown is among the most popular and valuable of all New Zealand coins.
