Æthelwulf (839-858), King of Wessex and son of Ecgberht, sealed a marriage alliance with King Burgred of Mercia, which later proved decisive in checking the Viking Great Army. A pious man, he not only consolidated royal power, but also managed to make a pilgrimage to Rome in 855-856.
