When King Æthelwulf of Wessex went on a pilgrimage to Rome in 855-856, he appointed his two sons to rule in his absence, Æthelbald as King of Wessex and Æthelberht as king of the newly acquired territory in Kent. This division was to persist following the death of Æthelwulf in 858, but only for two years, as Æthelbald died in 860, making the surviving Æthelberht the sole king of all of the territory of Wessex.
