From the reign of Charles I in the early 17th century, the Royal mint used provenance marks to indicate the sources of the metal used for that issue. The roses on the reverse of this coin designate the silver as originating from mines in the west of England, where silver was extracted both from dedicated silver mines and as byproduct from sites primarily exploiting lead and copper deposits. Other marks includes plumes and feather (Welsh silver), roses and plumes (silver from the Company for Smelting Down Lead with Pit Coale and Sea Coale), WCC (the Welsh Copper Company), SSC (the South Seas Company), LIMA (silver from Spanish ships captured by Commodore George Anson), VIGA (silver captured from the Spanish at Vigo Bay), and the elephant and castle (gold form the Royal Africa Company).
