'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid. AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. AR Dirham (25.1mm, 2.62 g, 9h). Tudgha mint. Dated AH 174 (AD 790/1) or AH 179 (AD 795/6). Standard ‘Abbasid legends, letter ha below reverse field, obverse annulets O oo O oo O oo. Apparently unpublished. VF, toned. Very rare.

The unit of the date on this coin is not completely clear. It appears to be ‘4’, for AH 174, but the annulet pattern matches that on ‘Abbasid dirhams struck at Ifriqiya and al-Mubaraka in AH 179, and it is not impossible that it was intended to be a ‘9’ instead’. It is clearly an ‘Abbasid issue, with Muhammad rasul Allah on the reverse and without the name of any local governor.
