WESTERN ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 17.03 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on throne with legs decorated with tiny sphinxes; in left field, monogram above amphora. Unpublished. Toned, underlying luster. Good VF.

The configuration of the control marks on this issue is the same as that found on the posthumous Alexanders struck at Myrina in Aeolis. However, the style of this issue significantly diverges from that found at Myrina, particularly the thin and tall amphora, which is quite different from the squat and “bulky” form that is consistently displayed on all of the various issues at that mint. The amphora here is typically that found on coins of Chios, but the present issue does not fit into the well studied series from that mint. Another divergence from Myrina is also the appearance of the sphinxes on the legs of the throne, which is unknown for that mint.
