Anonymous. 209-208 BC. AR Denarius (21.5mm, 4.25 g, 12h). Staff series. Uncertain mint in Sicily. Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) to left / The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback right; below, staff right. Crawford 78/1; Sydenham 208; RSC 20bb; Type as RBW 326. Lightly toned, a few light marks. VF.
From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Cederlind FPL 102 (Autumn 1995), no. 1263 ($250).
Struck from a die with a surrounding collar, with slippage of the collar, cf. Clive Stannard, “The Hub from Ancient Spain Reconsidered” (NumChron 1988), pp. 141-143, and https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/32933352395/ that demonstrates the edge effect on the reverse was caused by a die collar. This coin is the second example seen by me of this effect, on the same series RRC 78/1 but with different dies, proving it was a systematic technique for this issue. I have not seen the effect on any other issue. [Andrew McCabe]
