Anonymous. Circa 1st Century BC. Æ Quadrans (19mm, 3.77 g, 1h). Contemporary imitation. Uncertain mint. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion’s skin headdress; ••• (mark of value) to left / Prow of galley right; ••• (mark of value) to right, ROMA below. Apparently unpublished. Dark brown patina with hard green deposits, traces of red, light roughness. VF.

From the Judy Day Frink Collection.

We sent photos of this coin to Andrew McCabe for his observations: “It’s unofficial, an overstrike with a visible undertype, of flan and metal that suggest southern Latium or Campania unofficial mints, possibly in Minturnae, in 1st century BC, as documented extensively by Clive Stannard. These typically are found in the river Liri. Very small dies relative to flans are typical. Exact type or style not known to me. Interesting .”
