INSTITUT DE FRANCE, head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet / MEILHAC/ HENRY/ 1888 engraved in wreath with star at top. Rich iridescent cabinet toning, a few light scratches. EF.

Henri Meilhac (1830-1897) was a popular Parisian libretto writer of the 19th century. An avowed boulevardier and bon vivant, he is today best remembered for his collaboration on Bizet’s Carmen. Meilhac also worked closely with the German-born composer Jacques Offenbach, together producing a number of popular operas in the 1860s. This medal would have been presented on his election to the Academie française in 1888.
