Michael VIII Palaeologus. 1261-1282. AR Trachy (27mm, 1.84 g, 5h). Class XV. Constantinople mint. Struck circa 1261-1263. Nimbate, facing bust of Christ, wearing tunic and colobion, holding scroll in left hand / Christ enthroned, holding scroll in left hand and crowning Michael, kneeling right, with right hand on chest, supported by winged and nimbate St. Michael, . DOC 43; PCPC 6; BTM C.1; S. Bendall and P. Donald, “The Silver Coinage of Michael VIII, AD 1258-1282” in NumCirc XC.4 (May 1982), 1; SB 2244. Clipped, flan broken and repaired. VF. An extremely rare issue. Well struck on reverse.
