EDWARD T • – NEWELL, JMS monogram at lower right behind shoulder, elegant tall bust in business suit with prominent tie left / NEW YORK NUMISMATIC CLUB • ORGANIZED 1908 •, reverse 2: torch-bearer in Classical tunic holds a coin whose bold rays enlighten ancient civilizations. Edge: 1934 – 5 – 6 . IoC p. 177 (this bronze medal referenced). Some toning. About as made. No serial number on the silver medal. Serial number 18 on the bronze medal. Two (2) medals in lot. 16 silver and 34 bronze medals were struck.

Newell was an avid collector of ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine coins, assembling one of the 10 best collections in the world. He served as president of the American Numismatic Society for 26 years and received the first Archer M. Huntington Medal in 1918.
