MCMVIII-MCMXVII ********* around, craggy-featured caricature head left in a somewhat dilapidated top hat / • THE • NEW • YORK • NUMISMATIC • CLUB • around, ORG • DEC/ 1908 in two lines to lower left, reverse 1: two arms and hands, carefully holding a coin by its edges in left hand, a magnifying glass in right. Edge: plain. IoC p. 217 (this medal). Somewhat uneven tone. Otherwise, about as made. No serial number. Very rare, 1 of 5 struck in silver.

Albert R. Frey was a founder and charter member of the New York Numismatic Club, serving as its first Vice-President from 1908 to 1918. He served as the sixth president of the American Numismatic Association from 1905 to 1907. When presented with this obverse die, Frey threw it into the East River, thus preventing any restrikes.
