TROAS, Larissa. Late 5th - 4th centuries BC. AR Obol (7.5mm, 0.49 g, 2h). Head of female right / Amphora within incuse square. Savoca 25, lot 168; Asiaminorcoins.com 12882 (this coin); otherwise, unpublished in the standard refrerences. Traces of find patina, scrape on obverse, light porosity. Near VF. Extremely rare obol for this series, one of two known.
The nymph-amphora issue is apparently the earliest silver coinage for this city. The first example from this issue was a diobol that was acquired by the BM in 1901, though thought to be from Larisa Phikonis in Aeolis (Traité II 2064 = W. Wroth, “Greek Coins acquired by the British Museum in 1901” in NC 1902, 26). Diobols remained the only denomination known until 2003, when a tetrobol appeared on the market (CNG 63, lot 448 [erroneously as a triobol]). The present coin was the first instance of an obol to appear, sold by Gitbud & Naumann on Ebay in January 2016 (Ebay item no. 361462706585).
