FRANCE, Second Empire. Napoléon III. 1852-1870. Altered CU 10 Centimes (30mm, 9.17 g, 6h). The Death of Napoléon III. Made circa 1873. 10 Centimes of an uncertain date, altered with the legend PPP(?) and 1873 on obverse, with stippled fields. On reverse, stamped VIVE LE FRANCE. Brown surfaces. Fair.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

The engraver responsible for the alterations to this piece evidently had a limited tool set. The date of 1873 is composed of the letter I, two Os, a hand-stippled 7, and a reversed C with hand stippling. On the reverse, the N in FRANCE is a T and L, with an additional T stamped at a 45 degree angle.

Closing Date and Time: 3 November 2021 at 13:38:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
