Claudius. AD 41-54. Æ Sestertius (35mm, 23.81 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 41-42. Laureate head right / Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising hem of dress. RIC I 99; von Kaenel Type 55. Fine, light brown patina.
From the Ken Bressett Collection. Purchased at ANA coin show c. 1960 for @ $75.
The sestertius was a quarter denarius and was a major part of the Roman coinage system in Imperial times. The issues of Claudius with the reverse of Spes, a goddess of particular interest to the emperor, were quite large, and usually bear a fine portrait. They were so popular with the troops on the frontier that many local imitations were produced.
The final winners of all Keystone 6 lots will be determined at the online sale that will be held on 11 March 2022. Session Three, presenting part 1 of the Ken Bressett Collection, featuring Roman coinage, will be held Friday evening, 11 March 2022 beginning at 7:00 PM ET.
