ROMAN. Bronze simpulum. 1st-4th centuries AD. (13 cm). Ladle with a simple handle with a graceful bend. Comes with a modern display stand, made of a square black lucite base with a black metal upright support. Green patina, some encrustations, hole in bowl. Website shipping rates do not apply.

Ex Robert Wilson Collection; Metropolitan Museum Deaccession sale at Parke-Bernet Galleries 2724 (19 June 1968), lot 39 or 40 (part of, both had bronze items and not all were listed).

A simpulum was used at sacrifices to make libations which were poured on the head of sacrifical victims. It was also a traditional implement for the pontifices at Rome.
