EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Maroneia. Late 2nd-1st century BC. AR Tetradrachm (31mm, 16.54 g, 11h). Mint in the lower Danube region. Stylized head of Dionysos left, wearing ivy wreath; highly degraded form / Stylized Dionysos standing right, drinking from amphora, panther skin draped over arm; legend and form highly degraded. OTA –; Lukanc 1904 (same dies); Flesche –; Lanz –; CCCBM I –; KMW –. Iridescent tone, slightly wavy flan. EF. Extremely rare, a very unusual variety.

From the Jim Gilman Collection, purchased from Dr. Paul Rynearson, July 2007. Ex Gemini II (11 January 2006), lot 3.

The prototype for this imitation is the late series of tetradrachms from Maroneia which represented a variation on the tetradrachms of Thasos. The Maroneian issues showed Dionysos standing left, holding grapes and a pair of narthex wands, with a chlamys draped over his arm. Here, the legend is reduced to a series of pellets and the god’s pose and attributes are altered. The new attributes are arguably more suitable and more obviously Dionysian than the original.
