Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. AR Denarius (19.5mm, 3.74 g, 5h). Uncertain Spanish mint (Colonia Patricia?). Struck circa AD 18-17/16 BC. Bare head right / Triumphal arch of Augustus: central arch surmounted by a facing quadriga; side arches, on each of which is a standing figure; on left, figure standing right, holding a signum in raised hand; on right, figure standing left, holding an aquila in raised hand and bow at side. RIC I 137; RSC 84. Toned, a few shallow scratches on reverse. Good VF. An important historical and architectural reverse.

The Arcus Augusti (Arch of Augustus) was erected in the Roman Forum circa 20 BC to commemorate the return of the battle standards lost by Crassus at the Battle of Carrhae. Coins struck at several mints between 19 and 16 BC portray a triple-span arch surmounted by a triumphal quadriga, with figures holding standards to either side. These provide our only evidence of the arch's appearance, as the only surviving pieces of it are two fragmentary marble plaques bearing the Fasti Capitolini and the Acta Triumphorum, important lists naming Roman consuls and triumphing generals, now housed at the Capitoline Museum.
