IMP T AEL CAES ANTONINVS, bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right / TRIB • POT COS •, CONCORD in exergue, Concordia seated left, holding patera in right hand and resting left arm on statuette of Spes set on base. RIC II.3 2719 (Hadrian); Calicó 1488 (same dies as illustration); BMCRE p. 371, note; Biaggi 701 (same dies). Tiny die break on obverse, faint scuff in reverse field. Good VF.
This aureus, which conspicuously lacks the title of Augustus, is generally assigned to the five-month period of the Caesarship of Pius under Hadrian. Hill, however, places it after Hadrian’s death, during the new emperor’s dispute with the Senate over his predecessor’s deification, at which time Pius renounced the title of Augustus.
