ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Late 3rd-mid 2nd centuries BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.98 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. CNG E-363, lot 173 (same dies; attributed to Pamphylia). Light deposits, minor doubling on obverse. Good VF.

There are many unmarked issues of Alexander tetradrachms, which Price attributed to a variety of mints based on find data. In Asia Minor, issues similar in style to the present piece were given to Pergamon and an uncertain mint in Pamphylia. However, none of the coins Price references for each of these mints is adequately similar in style to confidently assign this coin to either. Moreover, the obverse style here is also close to that found at a number of other mints in Asia Minor that were striking Alexanders during the same period, though no unmarked issues were given to them by Price. Finally, this period in Asia Minor also saw a number of imitative issues that could account for the lack of controls. The Mektipini hoard appears to have the largest number of unmarked issues among hoards, and though Price attributed some to various mints, many others he left unassigned, which gives insight to the special problem posed by these issues.
