PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy VI Philometor. First sole reign, 180-170 BC. Æ Obol (26mm, 14.75 g, 12h). Uncertain mint on Cyprus. Diademed head of Zeus-Ammon right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; lotus flower in left field, EYΛ between legs. Svoronos 1398 (Ptolemy VI with Eulaios); Lorber, Lotus, Series VI.3; SNG Copenhagen 294. Earthen dark green patina, countermark on reverse (Seleukid anchor within incuse rectangle). VF.

Minted in Cyprus during the early sole reign of Ptolemy VI, this bronze obol was seized by the invading Seleukid army of Antiochos IV Epiphanes and countermarked for use in Seleukid commerce. The royal name ΠΤΟΛΕΜΟΥ has also been partially effaced. Antiochos briefly occupied Cyprus in 168 BC before he was forced to end his Egyptian campaign by an aged Roman ambassador, Gaius Popillius Laenus.
