Coronaton issue. + Levon, king of the Armenians in Armenian, the Virgin standing facing, receiving Levon kneeling left, head facing; dove between; ray of light above / + By the will of God in Armenian, two lions rampant back-to-back, each with head reverted; between, cross pattée set on spear. In the kingdom of Lesser Armenia, which was closely associated with the Crusader states, ‘regal coinage began under Levon or Leo I (1185-1218). Leo… valued his western contacts so highly that he requested the regal title from the Emperor VI in 1197 and was crowned at Sis by Henry’s representative before the assembled Armenian nobility on 6 January 1198.’ Grierson, p.135.
